Moving Your Car Faster and Safety

Spring and summer are when many families move to new homes in America.
Moving Your Car Faster and SafetyMaybe its cabin fever after being cooped up for the long winter, seasonal job opportunities, or just the most convenient seasons to move thanks to the weather.

Most folks use moving companies to ship their belongings long distances, but what about their cars? Instead of making a long-distance drive yourself, using a car transporter to ship your car to your new destination could be the way to go for you.

Whether you making a move for a new job, the semi-annual snowbird migration or moving to make a new start, there are a number of reasons you should use a car transport service to get your vehicle to your new locale.

Fast Car Moving Auto Transport: moving cars for our customers for over two decades

1. Safety: Using Fast Car Moving Auto Transport is actually safer than driving it yourself.

2. Mileage: Using car shippers saves wear and tear on your vehicle for long distance transports.

3. Cost: It’s often less expensive to ship your car than drive it. Gas, food and lodging add up quick.

4. Stress: Long distance road trips can be less than relaxing. Think or your average commute around town. Idiots abound. Now multiply that by 1,000 miles or more. Not a pleasant thought, right?

5. Maintenance: It’s recommended you get your car tuned up or serviced before making a long distance road trip. If you hire a car mover, this is unnecessary.

6. Repairs: Despite the best laid plans of mice and men, unexpected breakdowns can happen on long distance road trips. If you’re in the middle of nowhere you’ll need to hire a tow truck to get you to the nearest mechanic, then have to rent a hotel room while you wait for the vehicle to be repaired. Avoid this nightmare completely by using an auto shipper.

7. Multiple vehicles: Many families

USA Car Shipping Export Rules

Car Shipping from the USA Export Rules and Regulations

USA Car Shipping Export RulesWhen you ship your car overseas with Fast Car Moving Auto Transport we will handle all aspects of both shipping and US Customs documentation for you. We will require copies of some documents relating to your vehicle and in some instances may require some documentation to be signed by you however, our experienced team of car shipping experts will give you clear details of anything that is required to make sure that your car is shipped from the US without a hitch.

While we handle the documentary side of shipping your car for you, there are some basic requirements that we suggest you familiarize yourself with in advance so that when the time comes to get your car moving you will have an understanding of what may be required.

Below we have listed some of these basic requirements as a quick reference guide for you however, if you need any additional information or if you would simply like to get in touch with one of our team for a bit of advice you can contact us here. Alternatively, if you would like to request a free international car shipping quotation please complete our quick 60 second quote form on the right of this page to receive your personal quotation along with full details of our services.

Basic Requirements:

All vehicles being exported from the United States are subject to standard documentary declarations to both shipping lines and the US customs authorities. Documentation identifying your vehicle, such as the licence document, should include sufficient information to accurately describe the vehicle being shipped and must carry the VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number) that matches the VIN number on the car itself. If you do not have or have lost your vehicle license document, a replacement can be obtained from the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). If you require a replacement license document please contact your local DMV office for details of both how to apply and how long it may take before you to receive it.

Exceptions:

If your vehicle was originally brought in to the United States temporarily under a Carnet de Passage, a Temporary Importation Bond or under personal exception for non-residents; you should only need to present the original documents detailing the temporary importation as these original documents will be required by US customs to establish that the vehicle is being re-exported in line with guidelines governing the original import.
Documentation Required

Used Vehicles:

For vehicles purchased anywhere in the United States, the exporter must provide documented proof of ownership before being allowed to ship the car overseas. If the car is owned by a third-party (if for instance there is outstanding finance on the vehicle) the exporter must provide written authorization from that third-party confirming that the car can be exported. This confirmation must include all contact information for the third-party owner so that independent verification can be requested if deemed necessary. If you are a US government employee leaving the country on official travel orders you may be required to prove you have complied with the sponsoring agencies travel documents before being allowed to ship the vehicle.

For vehicles purchased abroad, the exporter must again provide to customs documented proof of ownership of the vehicle, including a translated version of the documentation if it is in a foreign language.

New Vehicles:

For new vehicles purchased within the United States from a manufacturer, distributor or dealer; the exporter will be required to provide customs with a Certificate of Origin evidencing that the car was manufactured for sale within the United States. Such documentation should have been provided to you upon purchase from the manufacturer, distributor or dealer.

Junk or Scrap Vehicles:

If you are exporting a scrap vehicle that has a valid 'junk' or 'scrap' certificate, you may be required to provide a copy for presentation to customs when your car is shipped from the US.

How to Transport a Car?

Fast Car Moving Auto Transport is a great place to start when choosing a moving company.

Be careful when comparing your moving quotes, as some may only be moving estimates and many don’t include all of the extra costs that people forget about.

ITEMS YOU WILL NEED

TItle or a letter from the lien holder
Shipper Export Declaration form
Declaration of Dangerous Goods form
Car insurance that covers overseas shipping

Step 1
Compare quotes from various auto shippers who specialize in overseas travel.

Expect to pay per mile to have a company transport your car from its location inland to a seaport. Most auto shippers leave from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Jacksonville, Miami, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Baltimore and Wilmington, DE. Don't be surprised to pay more for a large car both on land and by sea--companies will charge extra to transport an over sized car to the port, and then charge extra to carry it and store it on board ship.

Step 2
Submit all necessary paperwork requested by the auto shipper. This includes two copies of a notarized title, a letter from the lien holder if it exists, a Shipper Export Declaration form and a Declaration of Dangerous Goods form.

Step 3
Check with your car insurance company to see if your auto policy covers overseas transport. If not you will have to purchase shipping insurance. The cost of this is anywhere from 1.5 and 2.5 percent of your car's estimated value, and can be obtained through the auto transport company you choose to ship your car overseas.

Step 4
Get your car thoroughly cleaned inside and out, as well as serviced, before it gets picked up by the auto shipping company, so that it will work properly when it gets to its destination. This includes checking your fluids, battery charge and tire air pressure. Remove items like roof racks, spoilers or anything that excessively protrudes from your car and can be easily damaged. Be sure to remove any electronic devices like E-Z pass before shipping.
Remove all personal items from your vehicle such as a car alarm, leaving behind only the spare tire, the jack and a quarter-tank of gas.

Step 5
Thoroughly inspect your car prior to its departure so that you recognize any damage that may occur in transit.

How to Ship an Automobile Overseas
Most people transport their car overseas by contracting with an auto shipper specializing in carrying passenger vehicles across the ocean. These companies are experts at managing the paperwork and customs regulations that vary from country to country and that can make your life a headache if you don't know what you are doing. According to costhelper.com, the price can range from $750 and to as high as over $4000 depending on the distance required for ocean as well as truck transport for those whose cars are located inland, the size of the car and shipping insurance rates. Moving items internationally requires paperwork and preparation and transporting a car overseas is no exception.

Preparing Your Car for Shipping

Then prepare your car to be shipped"

Most auto transport companies have standard requirements, but make sure to find out what your particular transport company requiresThe government – as in the U.S. Department of Transportation – requires a full set of keys to be given to the auto transport driver. There should be a key for each lock. That may be two or three keys depending on how many your car requires. Most common are the ignition and trunk but some vehicles also have a glove box key. So you may need to make a new set of keys if you don’t have an extra one. It’s always good to keep a set and give the spare to the car shipping company.

Preparing Your Car for ShippingMake sure the gas tank is not completely full or empty. Your car won’t be driven much, so you don’t need to have the added weight of a full tank, but it could cause a serious problem if the tank is dry and the shipper can’t move the vehicle on or off of the transport. Most auto transporters say that right at 1/4^th of a tank is ideal.
Oh, and turn off any alarms that are part of the car. It’s a good idea to give alarm instructions to the vehicle shipping company. You don’t want their drivers to get trapped with a screaming car and no way to stop the noise, or a dead battery when your car is delivered to you.

The rest of car shipping preparation is mostly common sense. First, remove anything that could fall off or get knocked off. For many cars and trucks, remove any removable antennae and place it in your trunk. You may want to label it and tape it down in case the shipping company must open your trunk. The same applies to any CB or cell phone antennae that you may have.

Next, remove any racks that are not original to the car. For instance, luggage racks, bike racks and ski racks should be taken off and put inside the car. If your truck has a canopy or a cap, make sure it is bolted to the truck. Also, remove any low hanging items. This includes such things as fairing, air dams and spoilers. If you do these things, you're making sure that simply driving your truck or car up or down a ramp won't cause damage.

Another good idea is to clean your vehicle. If your car is clean it will be easier to identify any pre-existing marks or dings, as well as any that may occur during shipping. You will be asked to do an inspection with the transport driver before and after transport. If there is any damage to your car glass, consider having it fixed before shipping. With the right car shipping quotes and some simple preparations, both you and your car will be ready to go when the time comes! Happy shipping!
